BILLY D. YOUNG TELEPHONE PIONEER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

THE MID-SOUTH CHAPTER OF THE INDEPENDENT TELEPHONE PIONEER ASSOCIATION (ITPA) IS OFFERING THE BILLY D. YOUNG MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IN AN EFFORT TO SUPPORT FELLOW TELECOMMUNICATIONS WORKERS IN EDUCATING THEIR DEPENDENT CHILDREN. THIS SCHOLARSHIP IS MADE AVAILABLE THROUGH THE MID-SOUTH CHAPTER AND IS SUPPORTED BY THE INDIVIDUAL PIONEER CLUBS IN THE CHAPTER. 

 APPLICATION CRITERIA:

CURRENT HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS AND UNDERGRADUATE COLLEGE STUDENTS WHO ARE DEPENDENT CHILDREN OR GRANDCHILDREN OF AN EMPLOYEE OF A TELSE MEMBER COMPANY OR MID-SOUTH CHAPTER OF ITPA MEMBER WILL BE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR THE BILLY D. YOUNG MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP.  PREVIOUS APPLICANTS WHO HAVE NOT PREVIOUSLY BEEN AWARDED THIS SCHOLARSHIP AND ARE CURRENTLY ATTENDING COLLEGE MAY APPLY.  APPLICANTS MUST BE U.S. CITIZENS AND MUST BE CURRENT, FULL-TIME STUDENTS. HIGH SCHOOL APPLICANTS MUST ANTICIPATE GRADUATION FROM SECONDARY SCHOOL DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR IN WHICH APPLICATION IS MADE AND MUST BE PLANNING TO PURSUE A DEGREE AT AN ACCREDITED U.S. POST SECONDARY INSTITUTION.  UNDERGRADUATE COLLEGE STUDENTS MUST BE ENROLLED FULL TIME IN AN ACCREDITED U.S. POST SECONDARY INSTITUTION.  STUDENTS MAY OBTAIN APPLICATIONS 
HERE AND MAIL OR EMAIL THE COMPLETED FORMS TO THE DESIGNATED ADDRESS BY FEBRUARY 29, 2020.
 

A COMPLETE APPLICATION MUST INCLUDE ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

1) APPLICATION FORM

2) CURRENT PHOTOGRAPH

(NO SMALLER THAN 4x6 IF SUBMITTED BY MAIL OR JPEG IF SUBMITTED BY EMAIL)

3)  ORIGINAL ESSAY 

SELECTION CRITERIA

SELECTION OF PIONEER SCHOLARS IS BASED ON A NUMBER OF FACTORS WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON EACH INDIVIDUAL’S CHARACTER, PERSONAL MERIT, AND BACKGROUND.  MERIT IS DEMONSTRATED IN A VARIETY OF WAYS: LEADERSHIP IN SCHOOL, CIVIC, AND OTHER EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES; ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT; AND MOTIVATION TO SERVE AND SUCCEED IN ALL ENDEAVORS. SELECTION WILL BE SENSITIVE TO THE ECONOMIC BACKGROUNDS OF APPLICANTS, REFLECTING AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE THE DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILES OF THE VARIOUS SELECTION OF AREAS.

SELECTION PROCESS

SELECTION OF EACH SCHOLAR OCCURS IN TWO PHASES, BEGINNING THE FIRST OF EVERY YEAR AND CULMINATING IN THE SPRING WITH THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE AWARD RECIPIENT.  A SCHEDULE OF KEY DATES AND DEADLINES IS LISTED BELOW.

PHASE 1

ALL APPLICATIONS SUBMITTED BY THE FEBRUARY 28TH POSTMARK DEADLINE ARE EVALUATED IN ORDER TO SELECT UP TO 21 FINALISTS, DISPERSED PROPORTIONATELY ACROSS THE MID-SOUTH CHAPTER SERVING AREA.

PHASE 2

ALL APPLICATIONS ARE REVIEWED BY AN INDEPENDENT SELECTION PANEL (TO INCLUDE THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS BUT NOT LIMITED TO THIS GROUP ONLY) ACCORDING TO CRITERIA ESTABLISHED BY THE MID-SOUTH CHAPTER, AND THE AWARD RECIPIENTS ARE ANNOUNCED AT THE MID-SOUTH CHAPTER SUMMER CONVENTION.
